ABOUT ACTH

Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH, adrenocorticotropin, corticotropin) is a polypeptide hormone produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland.  It is an important component of the hyphothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and in response to stress, it is often produced along with its precursor, Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone from the hypothalamus.  Its principal effects are increased production and release of glucocorticoids by the cortex of the adrenal gland.  ACTH is also related to the circadian rhythm in many organisms.

OUR ASSAY

Our ACTH ELISA is a sandwich assay where samples and standards bind to a monoclonal antibody specific to ACTH coated onto a microtiter plate.  After a primary incubation of 1 hour, a second monoclonal antibody conjugated to HRP is added. Following a wash step, substrate is added which reacts with bound ACTH-conjugated antibody, generating a signal that once stopped yields OD readings at 450nm.
