BACKGROUND: The HMa2 monoclonal antibody specifically reacts with mouse CD49b (integrin alpha 2) , a 150kDA transmembrane glycoprotein that forms the VLA-2 complex with CD29 (integrin beta 1) . VLA-2 is expressed on NK-T cells, epithelial cells, platelets, and CD+4 T lymphocytes. It is the receptor for laminin and collagen and is upregulated in response to mitogens. The Hma2 antibody is reported to partially block the interaction with collagen in T cells, but not NK cells.
