BACKGROUND: The 23C6 monoclonal antibody specifically reacts with the human CD51/61 molecule, known as the integrin alpha v Beta 3 complex or vitronectin receptor. The complex binds to other ligands such as CD29, fibrinogen, fibrinectin, vWf, laminin, and thrombospondin. It is expressed by endothelial cells, osteoclasts, melanoma cells, and at low levels on platelets and macrophages. The 23C6 antibody is reported to be able to block the receptors ability to form interactions with some of its ligands.
